Awful from beginning to end. The storyline is bland and incredibly predictable. The director has no only followed the path of your basic sporting feel good movie but he has stuck rigidly in the middle, not even straying slightly to the side. The result is not entertaining. The concept of fighting robots is not well thought through and never fully explained as well which leaves you begging the question why watching robots act out exactly what humans have been doing for hundreds of years is such an improvement that it radically changes the sport? The whole underdog principle is that the contender gradually works on themselves throughout the film getting better, stronger, faster or at least observing some weakness in their opponent, not one of these things happen in the film leaving you asking what exactly the champion robot's team spent their money on that they could be beaten by a robot so poor that the junkyard it was found in valued it so little they left in buried and forgotten. The characters also add to the film's badness. Hugh Jackman plays a character who makes unbelievably bad decisions, he acts with the sort of stupidity put in place to move on the plot rather than add faults to a figure to make them relatable. Dakota Goyo's abandoned at birth 11 year old gradually becomes more annoying as the film wears on and displays behaviour so cringy it physically hurts the viewer. Evangeline Lilly does well as the character who's past grievances have something to teach Jackman but she never really gets enough screen time for us to understand the emotional experiences that cause the game changing revelation Hugh has. The whole film is so riddled with plot holes you have to wonder whether the director was on the right set. In his first 'league' match Atom overcomes his two headed opponent (yes you heard me, and no you're not wrong in thinking there's no benefit for a robot to have an additional head) because it has some sort of shoulder related problem. Here lies a problem, robots don't need time to recover from injuries, you simply give them a new part, therefore there is absolutely no reason for them to be in top condition for each fight. Then there's the issue of the disappearing technology. We're told that Atom is a second generation robot, now although we're not told what generation they're actually on we know they're at least one generation up, see the problem? A gap of one generation in Ipods see's a remarkably change in technology and yet we're to believe that an average Joe second generation can beat some of the best fighting robots in the world. We'll skip over some others and go straight to the hole that's staring you in the face, the final fight. So Zeus is giving Atom a right going over and Atom's just taking it, half the time he's not even blocking the punches and this happens for the best part of three rounds. Now Zeus manages to 'knock out' opponents of the current generation when they've take far less punishment even though Atom would lack the same armour and component protecting technology they posses. Then Zeus starts running out of power, I'll repeat that so you realise it's not a typo, he starts running out of power. Atom has not only managed to survive a beating that destroys stronger, tougher robots but also depletes and energy source that would have been designed to allow Zeus to last through a fair fight and so by decree should have been more than sufficient in a fight where he's barely threatened. When Atom then finally fights back Zeus seems to be equally damaged when hit by a weaker robot a fraction of the number of times Zeus has hit Atom. If you haven't seen this film then don't give it time of day, if you have seen it then I can only say that I share your pain. In a year that saw The Fighter and Warrior (two of the best films ever and the two best sporting films ever created) Real Steel is really shown as what it is, CGI based c* p designed to reel in the unwashed and undiscerning masses.
